RURAL SKILLS PROJECT
North Shropshire
ASDAN Accredited Centre.
Whats on offer at Red George?
Whilst mainstream education is successful in meeting the needs of many young people, there is a minority for whom it is not able to meet their needs for a variety of different reasons. Red George Rural skills project can help support these young people. We provide a varied and practical form of education with flexible learning programes to suit individual need. Our aim is to help young people achieve their full potential through an alternative programme of education. Some young people attend as a supplement to their education, whilst others attend with a view to reintergrating into the school environment at a future date.
Pupils have the opportunity to learn a variety of rural skills:
* Care of Animals: goats, pigs, chickens, rheas, dogs.
* Horticulture: preparation of soil, planting, growing and caring for variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers. Correct use of tools and equipment.
Pupils will learn a vairety of transferrable skills which will be of value to them in their daily lives and future careers. All pupils will leave the project with a Record of their achievements and in house awards.
We are an accredited ASDAN Award centre, which enable the pupils to achieve ASDAN short course awards. These awards involve evidencing their work through a portfolio. The short course award can be a stand alone qualification or used as points towards the Bronze/Silver Award scheme available in many schools.
Pupils can also achieve the John Muir environmental Award for project work they undertake.
Pupils are taught on a 1:2 ratio by experienced, patient and dedicated volunteers who are all CRB checked.
Providing a healthy and safe environment is of prime importance to us. An individual risk assessment is agreed with the pupils school/parents/guardian when the pupil is first referred to us. All pupils receive Health and Safety training on their first day at the project. Communication is an important aspect of the pupils success therefore termly reports are produced and teachers, parents and guardians are welcome to visit.
As well as gaining certifiicates as recognition of their achievements young people develop their motivation, aspirations, confidence and team working skills. Their general health and well being are enhanced from being physically active in the fresh air enjoying and developing an appreciation of the countryside.
In order to finance the upkeep of the project it is necessary to make a charge. Further details of costs are available via email: info@redgeorge.co.uk or telephone: 07717777128
